Joshua Bermudez is an up-and-coming jazz guitarist, with years of experience performing at some of the most frequented spots for live music in Miami, such as Lagniappe and the Open Stage, and studying under the tutelage of many veterans on the Miami jazz scene, such as Alvaro Bermudez and Jim Gassior. He recently joined the Encore family as an electric guitar teacher.
Beginning in his sophomore year of high school, Mr. Bermudez started performing jazz in cities across the country. In 2012, he was appointed for the Guitar chair of the 2013 Florida All-State High School Big Band, performing in Tampa, Florida, under the direction of Michael Mossman. That same year, Mr. Bermudez traveled to New York with the New World School of the Arts High School Big Band to participate in the 2013 Essentially Ellington Competition and Festival, where he received an Outstanding Soloist Award. The following year, Mr. Bermudez played with Mark Whitfield, Jr. at the 2014 YoungArts Regional Program – Miami. Also that year, as part of the 2014 GRAMMY Jazz Combo and Choir, Mr. Bermudez performed with Aaron Parks at the Official GRAMMY’s After Party at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, CA. That summer, he participated in the 2014 Brubeck Summer Jazz Colony at Sierra Nevada College, studying with faculty members such as Steve Cardenas and Colin Stranahan. From 2014-2015, Mr. Bermudez was a member of the Thelonious Monk Institute Performing Arts All-Star High School Septet. With the group, he played at the 2014 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Trumpet Competition Gala with Kellylee Evans, as well as at the 2015 JEN Conference. In 2015, Mr. Bermudez performed with Hubert Laws as a part of the 2015 GRAMMY Big Band.
While pursuing his undergraduate degree at the Frost School of Music, under the instruction of world-renowned guitarist John Hart, Mr. Bermudez had the privilege of playing in some of the school’s most premier ensembles, such as the Funk/Fusion Ensemble and the Frost Concert Jazz Band, the latter with which he traveled to perform in Washington, D.C., and Chicago, IL. While Mr. Bermudez was in the band, the CJB performed with Dave Holland, Nick Smart, and John Beasley. Outside of school ensembles, Mr. Bermudez plays gigs regularly as both a leader and a sideman. In the Summer of 2019 he had the opportunity to showcase his original music at WDNA’s Jazz Encounters.
In the Fall of 2019, Mr. Bermudez began a Graduate Teaching Assistantship in the Jazz Guitar Department at the Frost School of Music, pursuing a Masters in Music in Studio Music and Jazz. During the first year of his Master’s, Mr. Bermudez again had the privilege of playing in the Frost Concert Jazz Band under the direction of John Daversa. This year, the group performed with Miho Hazama, Gregg Bissonette, Dafnis Prieto, Allison Wedding, Shelley Berg, and Dave Liebman. In addition to CJB, Mr. Bermudez played in the premiere jazz small group at the school: The Frost Septet under the direction of Chuck Bergeron. The group performed with Allison Wedding at the 2020 GroundUp Festival.
Mr. Bermudez is currently working on a number of musical projects with the prospective releasing of recordings of his music.
